 The international puppet theatre festival PUPPET FAIR – SOFIA presents a varied international program of children and youth performances for different age and social groups. The organizer of the festival is the internationally known Sofia Puppet Theatre. The aims of the festival are to assist in the development of young professionals in the puppet theatre; to stimulate closer contacts with professional communities from different countries; to stimulate the exchange of ideas relating to the development of contemporary puppet theatre.
The festival has already taken place five times. It is a biennale. The next festival will take place in 2010.
Previous festivals featured many performances from Greece, Turkey, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovenia, Belgium, Japan, Hungary, France, etc. The festival has explored every genre and style of puppet theatre, including street performances, puppet theatre for adults, any kind of animation with puppets. In 2008 year was the 5th edition of the festival and it was the height of the previous ones. On this basis in 2010 we want to make it stronger, bigger and more opened to new contemporary puppet theatre forms.
The PUPPET FAIR uses two venues: open-air spaces and streets. We have support from the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture, the National Academy of Theatre and Film arts, the National Academy of Art, the Sofia Municipality, media partners, and the Bulgarian Association of Puppet Artists.
The festival does not have a commercial or competitive character!
We organize supporting events such as exhibitions (students’ scenography projects, children’s paintings, puppets, etc.), an art market for young professionals, theory discussions, etc.
